Dr Mike Thewalt has received a grant of more than $100,000 to undertake fundamental research into improving silicon technology. The Simon Fraser Univ physics professor received his institution’s largest grant under the recent competition of the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council. Thewalt will use the grant to construct a unique spectrometer for analyzing the spectrum of light emitted by synthetically manipulated silicon.....

The National Institute for Nanotechnology (NINT) has recruited two senior scientists from Purdue Univ in Indiana to fill key posts. Dr Jillian Buriak has been appointed lead researcher of the materials and interface chemistry group and Dr Hicham Fenniri will lead the supramolecular nanoscale assembly group. Both will become professors in the Univ of Alberta’s chemistry department. Originally from Toronto, Buriak received a PhD in chemistry from the Univ Louis Pasteur in France and took her undergraduate studies at Harvard Univ. She did her post-doctoral work at The Scripps Research Institute with support from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council before moving to Purdue in 1997. Buriak’s research expertise focuses on the modification of semiconductor surfaces underpinning a new generation of opto-electronic and molecular devices. She is being nominated for a Canada Research Chair. Fenniri holds degrees in chemistry and biochemistry from the Univ Louis Pasteur and did post-doctoral at Scripps before joining Purdue in 1997. His research expertise is in the convergence of combinatorial chemistry and supramolecular chemistry for the design of nanoscale structures….
