Robert Dunlop is retiring from the federal public service on October 17th after a 33-year career, most recently at Industry Canada where he led the development of S&T policy and programs. As assistant DM with Industry Canada's science and innovation sector, Dunlop has had a hand in many files including the introduction of programs such as the Centres of Excellence in Commercialization and Research, Knowledge Infrastructure Program, Business-Led Networks of Centres of Excellence, Canada Accelerators and Incubators Program, Canada Excellence Research Chairs, Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships and Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships. He has been an advocate for maintaining a balance between directed and undirected support for S&T and played a role in developing the science component of the government's deficit reduction action plan which largely exempted research funding from deep cuts. Prior to joining Industry Canada in 2009, Dunlop was general director in the Finance department's economic development and corporate finance branch which dealt with the budgets of Industry Canada and its portfolio of agencies and science-based departments….
