Dr Gordon McBean has assumed the presidency of the International Council for Science (ICSU) three years after ballots were cast by the general assembly at its previous gathering in Rome. McBean officially took up the position at the ICSU's recent meeting in Auckland NZ and is the second Canadian ICSU president since the Paris-based organization was formed in 1931. McBean was a lead author of the 2007 report by the International Panel on Climate Change. He is a professor at the Univ of Western Ontario in the departments of political science and geography and holder of a Research Chair at the university's Institute of Catastrophic Loss Reduction related to climate change.
