Dr Michel Béland has been awarded the 2005 Patterson Distinguished Service Medal for his contributions to Canadian meteorology. B‚land is DG of Environment Canada's Atmospheric Science and Technology Directorate, a position he has held since 1999. He joined Environment Canada in 1978 as a research scientist and became director of the Meteorological Research Branch in 1993. Renowned nationally and internationally in the areas of meteorology and environmental prediction, B‚land was recently elected president of the World Meteorogical Organization's Commiss
