Dr Christopher Loomis has been appointed VP research and international relations at Memorial Univ for a four-year period ending December/06. Loomis has been acting in the position since March/01 and replaces Dr Kevin Keough, who was appointed chief scientist at Health Canada last year (R$ January 15/01). A pharmacologist by profession, he is responsible for promoting and enhancing a broad range of research activities at the university, building partnerships and attracting more research funding. Loomis received his PhD from Queen’s Univ and joined Memorial’s School of Pharmacy in 1988….
Four researchers from Douglas Hospital in Verdun PQ have been honoured by the Canadian College of Neuropsychopharmacology, the first time all awards were won by scientists from the same institution. They are: Dr Satyabrata Kar (young investigator award), Dr Samarthji Lai (innovations in neuropsychopharmacology), Dr Howard Steiger (Heinz Lehmann award), and Dr Claire-Dominque Walker (young investigator award)….
Univ of Windsor professor Dr Jan Ciborowski has been selected to lead the Canadian component of a study to determine the causes of a dead zone threatening to appear in Lake Erie. Ciborowski is one of 25 US and Canadian scientists participating in the two-year, US-funded study, which will cost US$500,000. The focus of the study is the water of central Lake Erie, which appears to be reverting to an anoxic state similar to that experienced in the 1970s. The project stems from a conference Ciborowski helped plan in 1999 which resulted in a group that examined why the lake’s food web seemed to be out of balance….
