Dr Chaviva Hosek has been appointed president and CEO of the Canadian Institute for Advanced Research (CIAR), replacing interim CEO Thomas Kierans, CIAR's board chair who moved into the position following the departure of Stefan Dupré (R$, February 25/00). The appointment is effective January 1/01. Hosek has had a long career in government and academic circles, most recently serving as director of policy and research for the Prime Minister. She also served a term as minister of housing for the Ontario government and spent 13 years at the Univ of Toronto as a professor of English literature.
