A team of Winnipeg researchers has received the third annual Brockhouse Canada Prize for Interdisciplinary Research in Science and Engineering for its work in refining proteomics techniques for use in several medical and biological applications. Led by Dr Kenneth Standing, the team has worked together for more than a decade. It was responsible for determining the structure of the protein component of the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) virus and developed patented improvements to the mass spectrometer to carry out its work.
The team is comprised of researchers from several organizations: the Univ of Manitoba (Standing), chemists Harry Duckworth and Hélene Perrsault, physicists Werner Ens and Oleg Krokhin, and cell biologist John Wilkins); Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada (plant biologist Steve Haber); and, MDS Sciex (Igor Chernushevich, Alexandre Loboda and Bruce Thompson). MDS Sciex has already enabled some of the team's innovations to be incorporated into equipment sold to researchers globally. The Brockhouse Prize includes $250,000 for future research activities..
