Women enroled in master’s programs at Canadian institutions have overtaken men while those in doctorate programs are rapidly closing the gap with their male counterparts, according to new research by the Observatoire des sciences et des technologies (OST). The number of women in master’s programs increased from 48.1% in 1990 to 52.3% in 2001, while their share of doctoral enrolments rose from 35.5% to 46.1% in the same period. Variations were discovered according to region and discipline, but the overall trends show that the dominance of woman at the undergraduate level is spilling over into graduate studies.
