Wi-LAN accelerates R&D with TPC assistance

Calgary-based Wi-LAN Inc is embarking on a $29-million R&D project to accelerate development of its wireless non-line-of-sight transmission technology, with $8.8 million in assistance from Technology Partnerships Canada (TPC). The one-time telecom stock darling specializes in providing broadband wireless communications products and technologies for businesses and telecom service providers. Its wideband-orthogonal frequency division multiplexing technology is recognized as the standard in the US and Europe. Improving the technology will make Wi-LAN products more attractive for the provision of so-called “last mile” services in the areas of telemedicine and distance education. The TPC assistance compliments the federal government’s objective of ensuring broadband access to all communities (urban, rural and remote) by 2005….
