Technology Partnerships Canada (TPC) is investing $19.1 million in Alcan Primary Metals for the design, construction, testing and optimization of a new $242-million pilot waste processing facility. The investment is the first TPC announcement this year and the first to use a new contribution agreement developed by the federal government (http://tpc.ic.gc.ca/epic/internet/intpc-ptc.nsf/en/hb00526e.html). Alcan will construct the plant at its Jonqui‚re facility in the Saguenay region to convert hazardous waste material, called spent pot linings (SPL), into materials suitable for recycling. Alcan produces half of Quebec's SPL generation of 55,000 tonnes annually, which is currently stockpiled.
