SR Telecom Inc (SRT), St Laurent PQ, is making a major foray into the rural US point-to-multipoint wireless telecom market with the acquisition of assets related to the Velocity 2000 product line of Nera Telecommunications Inc, a subsidiary of Norway’s Nera ASA. SRT will purchase the inventory, laboratory equipment and intellectual property of Velocity 2000, which is in late stage development. Approximately 20 of Nera’s R&D personnel are also included in the agreement. The CDMA-based system operates on the 2.4 GHz unlicensed frequency band and is aimed at under-served areas of the rural US. Up until now, SRT’s products have been geared to the international marketplace, which operates under a different set of standards than those used in the US. The acquisition is expected to generate significant revenue for SRT in 2003….
CMHC announces external research awards
Canada Mortgage and Housing Corp (CMHC) has made 20 awards under its External Research Program (ERP) to conduct research into issues facing the Canadian housing industry. The awards are worth $20,000 each, bringing total grants under the program this year to $460,000. The ERP is designed to encourage academic researchers as well as those from the private and non-profit sector to present their ideas for research projects.
