R$ welcomes new editor to the team

I’m pleased to announce the appointment of Veronica Silva Cusi, an award-winning multimedia journalist, as R$ Editor. Veronica will be working with Managing Editor, Mark Henderson and Consulting Editor, Debbie Lawes, to continue bringing the latest news and analysis on Canadian STI policy and investment to the R$ community. She will be Mark’s successor as Managing Editor when he steps down later this year to pursue other interests.

During the transition period, Mark will remain as Managing Editor and will work with Veronica as she becomes familiar with R$ and our readers and stakeholders. Debbie Lawes, our Consulting Editor for R$ and Managing Editor for Canadian Innovation News, will also provide support and mentoring during the transition period. When Veronica takes the reins as Managing Editor, Mark will continue as Senior Correspondent, contributing articles on a regular basis.

Veronica received a Master of Arts in Communication Research at University of the Philippines, and subsequently worked as a business and technology journalist in the Philippines and later as an editor in Singapore. During her time in the Philippines, Veronica was twice recognized as Outstanding Reporter/Journalist by the Philippine Department of Science and Technology; won Honourable Mention in the Annual Science & Technology Awards by the Philippine Press Institute; and captured 2nd Prize at the Rotary Club of Manila Annual Journalism Awards.

In 2010, Veronica came to Canada and began working as a freelance journalist while she furthered her education. She received a Certificate in Business Writing (with honours) at Centennial College and a Master of Journalism at Ryerson University, where she received a Seymour Schulich Graduate Scholarship in Financial Journalism and a Ryerson Graduate Fellowship. In her final year at Ryerson, she received the Susan Westmoreland Memorial Award, which is awarded to a mature female student based on overall excellence.

Over the course of her 21-year career, Veronica has worked in print, online and television as a journalist, reporter and social media/community editor, covering a wide range of beats, including IT and telecom, retail, stock market, macro-economy, international trade, banking and finance, broadcasting, political economy, education and lifelong learning, agriculture, health, science and technology and marketing. She is particularly passionate about business, innovation and technology news. R$ is a perfect fit for her to bring this passion to our readers while continuing to build on her knowledge and strengths in these areas.

Veronica is excited about using her diverse skills and experience to provide news and analysis to our readers about the rapidly changing innovation landscape in Canada and around the world. She has set her sights on continuing to develop our readership in all areas, with a focus on corporate Canada and the investment community.
