Project to use battery packs for renewable power storage

Toronto-based Electrovaya Inc has signed a contract with the Manitoba HVDC Research Centre to develop, construct and demonstrate a utility-sized battery system using end-of-life electric vehicle battery packs. The $7.6-million project ($4.3 million from Electrovaya and $3.3 million from the Manitoba government) is intended to show the viability of using the repurposed batteries to store electricity generated by renewable energy systems such as wind and solar power. Lithium ion batteries are considered excellent potential for grid storage. The HVDC Research Centre is a subsidiary of Manitoba Hydro....
