Toronto-based Electrovaya Inc has signed a contract with the Manitoba HVDC Research Centre to develop, construct and demonstrate a utility-sized battery system using end-of-life electric vehicle battery packs. The $7.6-million project ($4.3 million from Electrovaya and $3.3 million from the Manitoba government) is intended to show the viability of using the repurposed batteries to store electricity generated by renewable energy systems such as wind and solar power.
