Prince Edward Island's bioscience sector is expanding, placing strain on existing lab and incubation capacity, prompting the province's bio-industry association to request federal funding for a new facility. The request was made by the Prince Edward Island BioAlliance earlier this month during an appearance before the Standing Committee on Energy and Infrastructure.

The proposed 7,200-sq-m BioAccelerator complex would be situated at the BioCommons Research Park in Charlottetown, targeting an unspecified amount of funding from the second phase of the federal infrastructure program.

It is intended to complement and create new opportunities for other players in the sector including the Atlantic Veterinary College, the PEI campus of the National Research Council, BioFoodTech, Holland College and Agriculture Canada Research.

The bioscience sector includes 46 companies employing more than 1,400 people and generating $200 million in export sales.
