Five universities have been awarded $1 million each over five years to conduct research into improving the teaching and learning of mathematics and science in grades K to 12 as part of a pilot program launched by Science and Engineering Research Canada (NSERC). The winning institutions — Univ of New Brunswick, Univ of Sherbrooke, Univ of Manitoba, Univ of Alberta and Univ of Victoria — were selected from 16 full applications and 41 letters of intent. The pilot programs stem from initiatives launched under NSERC’s visioning exercise of 2003 (R$, October 3/03). The program may be expanded if NSERC receives additional funding.
