The National Research Council (NRC) has completed the mapping of its employees to new portfolios as the agency pushes forward with its transition from an institute-based organization to one comprised of programs and portfolios. The transition is considered key to the NRC's goal of becoming a world-class research and technology organization. Portfolio managers will be in place by late January or early February and DGs are informing all staff which programs they will be working on beginning April 1/12. The next step is to develop a strategy and budget for each portfolio, as well as conducting a review of all administrative and common services. Led by NRC president John McDougall, the transformation is taking place as the government considers the conclusions of the Jenkins Panel, including a recommendation to break up the NRC into separate entities (R$, October 31 & November 11/11)….
