Industry Canada has unveiled a high-level group of industry and university leaders, scientists and government officials to serve on the Science, Technology and Innovation Council (STIC) with the first formal meeting slated for November 18th. Under the chairmanship of Dr Howard Alper, the new 17-member Council will report to the Industry minister (Jim Prentice) on a wide range of S&T and innovation issues identified by government and assigned by the minister.
STIC replaces three previous advisory bodies and joins the Council of Canadian Academies and the Office of the National Science Advisor as a primary source of S&T advice at the federal level. Industry Canada officials are currently discussing the first issues to be posed to STIC by year's end.
Alper was appointed as chair last June and actively participated in the selection of STIC members (R$, June 18/07). Advice will be evidence-based and STIC is required to produce regular reports benchmarking Canada's S&T performance internationally.
Officials say that care was taken to ensure that STIC membership is balanced in terms of sectors, career paths and regions. However, only three of the members are women.
