The Banff International Research Station (BIRS) has received $12.8 million to support its research and programming over the next five years following a review by its four supporting granting agencies. The global hub for mathematics research applies mathematical sciences and their manifestations in society, technology and society to assist in sectors as diverse as clean energy, advanced manufacturing and healthcare. The funding was provided by the US National Science Foundation ($5.1 million), Alberta Ministry of Economic Development and Trade ($4.1 million), the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council ($3.4 million), Mexico’s Consejo Nacional de Ciencia y Tecnología ($250,000). Support was also provided by the Univ of British Columbia, Univ of Alberta and the Univ of Calgary.
