Univ of British Columbia hired epidemiologist Dr. M-J Milloy as its first Canopy Growth Professor of Cannabis Science. The initial aim of this professorship is to lead clinical trials that will explore ways that cannabis-based therapy can help people with opioid abuse disorder stay on their treatment plan. Opioid overdoses killed an estimated 1,143 people in B.C. in the first nine months of 2018. Dr. Milloy is a research scientist at the British Columbia Centre on Substance Use (BCCSU). The UBC professorship was established with $2.5 million in funding from Canopy Growth Corporation and an additional $500,000 from the provincial government.
