Laurentian University names new president and vice-chancellor

York University’s vice-president of research and innovation Robert Haché has been selected to serve as Laurentian University’s 11th president and vice-chancellor starting in July. Haché began his tenure at York in 2011. Among his achievements, he led the development of the university’s 2013-2018 Strategic Research Plan, which prioritized research intensification; helped secure support from the Canada First Research Excellence Fund (CFREF) for the Vision Science to Application (VISTA) program, a nexus for transdisciplinary, translational research in the area of biological and computer vision; and created the York Research Chair program. Haché also founded Innovation York, a commercialization, entrepreneurship and knowledge mobilization group that currently engages more than 3,000 York community members. Previously, Haché served as vice-dean of research at the University of Ottawa and as associate vice-president of research at the University of Calgary. At Laurentian, he will be replacing interim president Pierre Zundel, who took over when Dominic Giroux left the post in 2017 to become president and CEO of Sudbury’s Health Sciences North hospital.
