Killam Prize winners

The Canada Council for the Arts has announced the winners of the 2017 Killam Prizes, which celebrate world class excellence in the arts and sciences. This year’s five winners will each receive $100,000 at a May 30th awards ceremony at the Governor General’s residence in Ottawa on May 30. This year’s winners are: Dr John Borrows, Univ of Toronto (social sciences) – Borrows is an Aboriginal scholar and lawyer specializing in Indigenous legal rights and comparative constitutional law; Dr Ford Doolittle, Dalhousie Univ (natural sciences) – Doolittle is an evolutionary and molecular biologist integrating the philosophy of biology and genomic research on previously controversial notions of the “tree of life” and Gaia Theory; Dr Thomas Hurka, Univ of Toronto (humanities) – Hurka is a professor of philosophical studies a and the author of many works in moral and political philosophy; Dr Julio Montaner, Univ of British Columbia (health sciences) – Montaner has spent three decades dedicated to improving the care and treatment of HIV/AIDS-infected people and is a professor of Medicine, chair of AIDS Research, and head of the division of AIDS in UBC’s Faculty of Medicine; Dr Molly Shoichet, Univ of Toronto (engineering) – Shoichet is strong advocate of women in science and technology careers whose research centers on tissue and polymer engineering, focusing on targeted drug delivery, tissue regeneration and stem cell research.
