Jack Smith, leader of the National Research Council’s Office of Technology Foresight, has been appointed director S&T Foresight in the Office of the National Science Advisor, located in the Privy Council Office. Under Smith, the NRC and the Office of the National Science Advisor will collaborate to develop S&T foresight capacity in Canada. Smith leaves the NRC after a 15-year career, serving successively as senior strategic corporate planner, manager of planning and assessment, and team leader for the NRC Corporate Vision to 2006. He created the NRC Office of Technology Foresight in 2002 to work with federal, provincial, academic and industry partners on longer term, horizontal projects designed to strengthen Canada’s S&T forward readiness and strategic positioning capacities. Smith will continue to work with federal and provincial agencies and other partners to advance the practice of Canadian S&T foresight. In this new position, he will focus on assembling national panels to examine S&T challenges that require collaboration amongst government, industry and academic planners of science and technology capabilities, infrastructure and programs development.…
