Industry Canada launches DRI strategy

The federal government is moving on commitments made in its recent Science, Technology and Innovation Strategy and 2015 Budget by launching consultations for a Digital Research Infrastructure (DRI) strategy. Led by Industry Canada, the on-line consultation is seeking submissions from a broad range of stakeholders to guide development of a strategy that the department says will enhance higher education research capacity and support research excellence. DRI is considered essential for the performance of computationally intensive research and management including high-performance computing, storage, high-speed networks and related software, standards and data management services. The strategy will be developed in-house in consultation with key stakeholders in the research ecosystem. It will build upon a number investigations and consultations previously undertaken by organizations such as CANARIE, Compute Canada, Universities Canada, U15 Group of Canadian Research Universities, Canada Foundation for Innovation and the Leadership Council for Digital Infrastructure. Submissions are due by September 15th and should focus on ways to transform Canadian DRI, challenges faced, the role of the private sector and the capacity of post-secondary institutions to support research data curation.
