Hydro-Québec and Fabgroups Technologies, Montreal, have signed an agreement to begin manufacturing a system to treat industrial sludge. The technology is the result of a four-year R&D project by LTEE, Hydro-Québec’s electrochemical and electrotechnologies laboratory, based in Shawinigan. The project was launched following a request by the pulp and paper industry, which was unable to adequately dispose of its solid waste. The energy-efficient system is comprised of a rotary kiln equipped with a plasma torch. It utilizes plasma-assisted sludge oxidation technology and can be used to process organic sludge from a variety of sources. The primary markets for the system are pulp and paper, agrifood, waste water treatment and other industries that produce solid organic waste….
