Dr Heather Munroe-Blum has been appointed to the top job at McGill Univ, replacing Dr Bernard Shapiro. With the appointment, the Univ of Toronto loses a skilled and effective VP research and international relations, although Munroe-Blum won’t assume her new duties as principal and vice chancellor until January 2003. As U of T’s VP research since 1994, she has racked up a remarkable string of accomplishments, making her one of the most sought after experts on S&T and innovation. Among the most prominent of her many appointments on boards and organizations, Monroe-Blum is chair of the Industry Canada University Advisory Group,vice-chair of the board of Genome Canada, chair of the Ontario Council on University Research, director of the Ontario BIOCouncil and founding member of MARS (Medical and Related Discoveries District), a new S&T convergence district in downtown Toronto. She holds a bachelor of arts and bachelor of social work from McMaster Univ, a masters of social work from Wilfred Laurier Univ and a PhD in epidemiology from the Univ of North Carolina....
