CANARIE has deployed a new optical network from Nortel Networks Corp that more than quadruples its previous network capacity. The network upgrade from Nortel's Metro Ethernet Networks division gives the research and education network up to 72 optical wavelengths operating at 10Gbps at its core and future enhancements to 40 Gbps/wavelength. The upgrade was achieved by incorporating Nortel's reconfigurable optical add/drop multiplexing (ROADM) technology, as well as its dynamically compensating optics (eDCO), which simplifies networking by extending wavelengths over 2,000 km without the need for dispersion compensation modules and their associated amplifiers. eDCO is based on Nortel's common photonic layer, allowing networks to migrate towards agile, adaptive, all-optical intelligent networking....
