The federal government has announced the creation of 95 new Canada Research Chairs (CRC) at a cost of $101.4 million. The new chairs bring the total announced to date to 627, with the objective of awarding 2,000 by 2005. The latest investment includes $9.8 million from the Canada Foundation for Innovation to provide infrastructure support for the chairs. The new chairs were distributed to 31 universities in research disciplines including medicine, biochemistry, earth science, forestry and artificial intelligence.
