The second of three reports detailing the accomplishments of Canadian health researchers has been released by the Association of Canadian Academic Healthcare Organizations (ACAHO). Entitled Eureka! World First Discoveries and Other Major Medical Breakthroughs, the report identifies more than 100 such achievements including the sequencing of the SARS genome in 2003 and the use of 3-D image-guided radiation therapy to treat prostate cancer in 2005. The first ACAHO report — Speed of Discovery: From Bench to Bedside to Business — was released last November. The final report — From Microscope to Marketplace: Spin-Off Companies — will be released later this month. ACAHO notes that 50 of the health research achievements described in the report have occurred since 2000 with the majority supported by the federal government. It is urging the Ottawa to participate in the development of a collaborative plan of action to fully leverage health research for the benefit of Canadians….
