Sick Kids robotic arm project receives another $10 million

The federal government is contributing $10 million to a project at The Hospital for Sick Kids in Toronto to develop an image-guided robotic surgical arm designed for paediatric patients. The $29- million project, dubbed KidsArm, is expected to have commercial benefits either through new start-ups or other revenue-generating activities. The funding through the Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario (FedDev Ontario) is the latest investment to the project in addition to $3.4 million from the Ontario Ministry of Research and Innovation through the Ontario Research Fund and a significant portion of the $91.1 million that Sick Kids was awarded in the Canada Foundation for Innovation's Research Hospital Fund competition. Fed Dev funding will go to the purchase of core foundation equipment that will be adapted for the KidsArm. Private sector partners include MacDonald Dettwiler & Associates Ltd and Philips.
