NSERC backs telelearning research network

A new research network for telelearning has emerged in the wake of the defunct TeleLearning Network of Centres of Excellence. LORNET is a research network of six universities that has received $7.5 million in financing from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC) through its Research Networks Grants Program for large-scale, multisectoral projects. Another $1 million is being contributed from nearly 30 partners to assist in validating and transferring technologies developed by the network. LORNET ties together researchers from the Univ of Quebec’s Télé-université, Univ of Waterloo, Simon Fraser Univ, Univ of Ottawa, Univ of Saskatchewan and École Polytechnique. Its scientific director is Dr Gilbert Paquette, who is also the founder of the LICEF laboratory, a world-leading centre for research on distance learning, cognitive informatics and training environments.
