Dr Ward Wilson has been named chairholder of the new NSERC/COSIA Senior Industrial Research Chair in Oil Sands Tailings Geotechnique. Wilson is a professor with the Univ of Alberta's department of civil and environmental engineering and principal investigator at the Oil Sands Tailings Research Facility (OSTRF) located in Devon AB. The chair is supported for an initial five-year period by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council ($1.95 million), Canada's Oil Sands Innovation Alliance Tailings Environmental Priority Area ($1.95 million) and Alberta Innovates - Energy and Environment Solutions ($500,000). The NSERC/ COSIA chair program will provide the industry, regulators and consultants with novel technologies to measure the effectiveness of current tailings remediation efforts, new processes for reducing the amount of postproduction tailings and simulation models to assist industry in tailings planning and management....
