Dr Gregory Newby has been appointed chief technology officer of Compute Canada, effective January/15. Newby comes to Compute Canada from Abdullah Univ of Science and Technology in Thuwai Saudi Arabia, where he was manager of the university's KAUST Supercomputing Core Laboratory and led the planning and acquisition of a leading-edge supercomputer. Prior to that appointment, he was director of the Arctic Region Supercomputing Centre at the Univ of Alaska Fairbanks. At Compute Canada, Newby will be responsible for the planning, coordination, procurement and deployment of advanced computing resources across Canada based on the needs of the research community. He holds a doctorate in information transfer from Syracuse Univ, an MBA from the Bainsbridge Graduate Institute of Pinchot Univ, Seattle WA and a masters in communications from the Univ of Albany. Newby was born in Montreal….
