Dr Gijs van Rooijen has been appointed the first chief scientific officer of Genome Prairie. The Dutch-born scientist received his MSc in molecular sciences from the Agricultural Univ in Wageningen and his PhD at the Univ of Calgary in the laboratory of Dr Maurice Maloney. His post-doctoral work was completed at Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada. Rooijen’s research provided the basis for the molecular farming applications being developed at SemBioSys Genetics Inc. Prior to taking on his duties at Genome Prairie, he directed 15 scientists at SemBioSys and was team leader for the first plant-produced commercial protein. Genome Prairie is one of five regional genomic centres established with funding from Genome Canada and other sources….
