Nortel Networks Corp has created two distinct R&D units and hired Gary Kunis as chief technology officer (CTO) reporting to recently appointed president and COO Gary Daichendt (R$, March 30/05). Kunis replaces Brian McFadden who was promoted to CTO just last year (R$, October 27/04). McFadden.will now serve as chief research officer (also reporting to Kunis) with responsibility for the Nortel’s Advanced Technology, Research and Standards unit. Like Daichendt, Kunis comes to Nortel from Cisco Systems where he was chief science officer. Considered an Internet pioneer during the 1980s, he led several engineering breakthroughs relating to Internet protocol standards and routing technology. Kunis will be responsible for aligning the company’s R&D priorities with its business strategies. Prior experience includes the design, implementation and operation of large data networks for the Department of Defense, US Navy, US Air Force, Boeing Co and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration. He holds a BA from State Univ of New York (Binghamton) and a master’s degree in economics from Tufts Univ….
